Jonah and the Big Fish
Nineveh was a beautiful city with gardens and green fields. There were many temples, palaces and houses.
Around the city were walls a hundred feet high. The soldiers stood on top of the towers to shoot arrows and
darts at their enemies when they came to fight against Nineveh. But Nineveh was a very evil city.
God spoke to the prophet Jonah saying, “Arise and go to Nineveh that great city, and tell the people of the
punishment that is coming upon them for their sins”.
Jonah did not want to tell the people so he went to the city Joppa by the sea. Jonah found a ship that was going
to a far country. He did not want to hear the Lord speaking to him.
The Lord sent a great big storm and the wind was blowing the ship. The sailors were very afraid and cried every
man pray to his God, and they began to throw out some of the load, so they would not sink.
Jonah was asleep when the captain woke him up and told him to pray to his God.
They cast lots and the lot fell to Jonah.
Tell us Jonah why this evil is upon us, what is your job? Where do you come from? Where do your people do
you come from?
Jonah said to them “I am a Hebrew and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven which made the sea and the dry land.
The men were very afraid and said “Why have you done this? The men knew that he fled from the Lord.
Jonah answered them and said cast me into the sea, and the sea shall be calm for you.
So they took Jonah and cast him into the sea and the sea was calm.
Now the Lord sent a great fish to swallow up Jonah, for three days and three nights. He prayed to the Lord while
he was the fish. He told God he was sorry, and asked God to forgive him.
God commanded the fish to cast him out of his mouth.
The Lord spoke to Jonah again “Arise and Go to Nineveh, and tell the people what I told you”
Jonah started his three day journey to Nineveh, as he entered the city he said, “Forty days and Nineveh shall be
overthrown.
The people believed God and turned from their wicked ways. And God saw this and forgave them and their city
was saved.
