The Good Samaritan
THE GOOD SAMARITAN
Theme: LOVING OUR NEIGHBOR

By Kim Gallovich

Taken from Luke 10:25-37

One day a lawyer asked Jesus what must I do to have eternal life.
Jesus answered him saying it is written in the word, have you not read it.  The Lawyer
answered and said it says to Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with your
soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus answered and said you are correct, do this and you shall live.

Then the lawyer asked but who is my neighbor?

Jesus answered him by telling the story of the Good Samaritan.

There was a man who was taking a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, thieves stopped him
and took his money and left him half dead.

Along came a priest that saw him and kept on walking. Then came a Levite man that looked
at him, but passed him by. Then came a Samaritan who had compassion on him. He
cleaned up his wounds with oil and wine and put him on the back of his animal, then he
took him to the inn and stayed with him all night. The next morning before he left he took
out his money and gave it to the inn keeper and said” please take care of him and if it costs
more than I gave you, I will pay you the next time I come by.”

Jesus asked the lawyer which of these three men was a neighbor to the man that was
attacked by the thieves.
The lawyer answered “ the man that showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said “ now go
and do the same to others. “

Jesus first tells us to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and strength. Then he
tells us to love your neighbor as yourself.
The story does not tell us why the first two men do not stop, maybe they were to busy
maybe that had more important things to do and did not want to be late, maybe they were
afraid if they stopped they would get robbed, there are many excuses they may have had
not to help this dying man.  The last man that stopped was moved with compassion he felt
sorry for him and he wanted to help him he could not just walk away. His heart was full of
love for this dying man.
This man had a love in him that only Jesus can give us, he loved his neighbor. Did you no
that your neighbor is not only the people that live next door to you, your neighbor is all
around you, he lives in a town, or city or on a farm he might live in a house or apartment,
or he may not have a home at all, he may live far away in another country, your neighbor is
everywhere.
So remember when we love Jesus with all our heart, soul and strength then we to can be a
Good Samaritan and love our neighbor as yourselves.
